OUR BELIEFS

The Holy Scriptures

We believe the Bible to be the only divinely inspired and authoritative, written word of God (Matthew 5:18; II Timothy 3:16; & II Peter 1:20-21).

The Godhead

We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons, also known as "Trinitarian Monotheism": The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:1-2; Matthew 28:19; Ephesians 2:18; & II Corinthians 13:13).

God the Father

God as Father reigns with providential care over His universe, His creatures, and the flow of the stream of human history according to the purposes of His grace (Acts 17:26). He is the Creator of heaven and earth (Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 40:28; 45:18; & John 1:3).  He is all-powerful, all loving, and all wise. God is Father in truth to those who become His children through faith in Jesus Christ. He is fatherly in His attitude toward all people (Psalm 145:8-9; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Genesis 1:1-31; Ephesians 4:6; John 1:12; Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:5; & Hebrews 12:5-9).

God the Son (The Person and Work of Christ)

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His preexistence (John 1:1-3; 18; 8:56-58; Matthew 15:24; & Mark 12:6), in His incarnation and virgin birth (John 1:14; Matthew 1:18-20; & Romans 1:3) in His sinless life (Isaiah 53:9-10; Luke 23:41; John 8:46; II Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15; & I Peter 2:22-24), His atoning death through His shed blood (Isaiah 53:4-6; Mark 10:45; Romans 5:19; II Corinthians 5:21; & I Peter 3:18), His burial (Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42; & I Corinthians 15:3-8), in His bodily resurrection (Matthew 28:5-6; Mark 16:6; Luke 24:6-7; I Corinthians 15:3-8; Romans 1:4; & I Thessalonians 4:14); in His appearance to many (Matthew 28:9-10; John 20:4-17; & I Corinthians 15:5), in His ascension to the right hand of the Father (John 20:17; Acts 1:2,9; Ephesians 4:8-12; Hebrew 1:3,13; & I Peter 3:22), and in His personal return in power and glory as judge (Matthew 25:31-32; Mark 8:38; 14:62; II Thessalonians 1:7-9; & Revelation 1:7, 11:12, & 14:4).

God the Holy Spirit

We believe in the continuing ministry of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit indwells and empowers the disciple of Jesus to live a holy, spirit-filled life (I Corinthians 3:16, 6:19- 20; & Ephesians 4:30& 5:18). The Spirit gives gifts to the church for the work of the ministry (I Corinthians 10:1-31 & Romans 12:4-8).

Humanity

We are made in the image of God, the supreme object of God's creation. Although people have tremendous potential for good, we have been marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called sin. Sin separates people from God. This is the reason God sent his Son Jesus to rescue us from the consequences of our sin and give eternal life to those who repent and believe (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:23; & Isaiah 59:1-2).  We believe that God created humanity as gendered beings (Genesis 1:27, 2:18, & 22). Human gender reflects the wise design of the Creator and each gender is endowed with special roles and responsibilities in humankind's stewardship of creation. Human marriage was instituted by God and affirmed by Jesus Christ (Genesis 2:18, 23-24; & Matthew 19:1-9). It is the covenantal union between one man and one woman for the purpose of procreation (Genesis 1:27-28 & Malachi 2:15). Human sexual intimacy is designed by God to only take place within the covenantal union of marriage between a man and a woman (1 Corinthians 6:18 & 7:2-5; & Hebrews 13:4).

Salvation

Jesus came to give eternal life to those who follow Him and become His disciples (John 1:4; John 4:14; John 6:40; John 14:6; & I John 5:20). A disciple is someone who has acknowledged Jesus' absolute authority over their lives. They have answered His call to deny themselves and follow Him (Matthew 10:36-39; 16:24-27; Mark 8:34-37; Luke 9:23-26; & John 10:27-30). This gracious call to become a disciple of Jesus is a gift of God and it is by His grace that enables us to respond with faith and allegiance (Romans 5:15-17; Ephesians 2:8-9). We believe that it is the blood of Christ that fully justifies the disciple of Jesus before the Father (John 3:16-18; 20:31; Romans 5:9; Colossians 1:14; & Hebrews 9:22). Disciples of Jesus continually grow in grace and holiness as they follow Jesus here on earth (II Peter 1:3-11 & 3:17-18).

Eternal Security for the Believer

Those who are truly converted and regenerated by God's grace are eternally secure in Christ (John 5:24, 6:54, & 10:27-30). Apostasy from Christian discipleship surely occurs, but it is our belief that true believers persevere (Matthew 13:1-9 & 24-30; & I John 2:19). Therefore, when someone defects from the faith there are two possibilities: either their immature and weak faith has been overcome by sin and temptation and are in a state of temporary lapse from discipleship; or they were never truly converted to Christ and remain outside of Christ. Regardless, both need the gospel and need to be exhorted to surrender to Christ and follow Him. Only at the final judgment will the eternal and final verdict be rendered. Therefore, we must always encourage disciples to examine themselves and follow Jesus (Romans 2:5-11; Matthew 7:21-23, 13:24-30, & 25:31-46; & II Corinthians 11:28,31 & 13:5).

The Resurrection

We believe in the return of our Lord Jesus Christ (John 14:3; Acts 1:11; & Hebrew 9:28). When our Lord returns, the resurrection of both the just and the unjust will occur (John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15; & I Thessalonians 4:14-18). The just are those who have been made right by trusting the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross (Romans 5:1-9 & Galatians 3:13) The just will be bodily resurrected unto eternal life; the unjust will be bodily resurrected unto eternal death and separation from the Father (Revelation 20:5-6, & 12-15).

Baptism and the Lord's Supper

Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Baptism is the public declaration of the believer's allegiance to King Jesus. It symbolizes the believer's identification with the crucified, buried, and risen Savior; the believer's death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to new life henceforth as a disciple of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:38-42; & Romans 6:1-11).

The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby followers of Christ, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, remember the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming (Luke 22:14-21 & 1 Corinthians 10:16, & 11:23-26).

The Unity of Believers

We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 8:9; II Corinthians 12:12-13; & Galatians 3:26-28). We believe in one holy universal church (Romans 12:5 & Ephesians 4:4-6).

Marriage and Family Life

Marriage is ordained by God and is exclusively a covenant relationship between one man and one woman. Because God has ordained marriage and defined it as the covenant relationship between one man, one woman, and Himself, the Community Church of Henderson will only recognize marriages between a biological man and a biological woman. Further, the pastors and staff of Community Church of Henderson shall only participate in weddings and solemnize marriages between one man and one woman. Finally, the facilities and property of Community Church of Henderson shall not host any weddings or marriage celebrations except those that are between one man and one woman. Christians who are married to each other are to relate to each other not only as husband and wife but also as brother and sister in Christ.

Christians who are married to unbelievers should strive to influence their homes for the glory of God by commending the gospel and demonstrating its power in their lives according to apostolic instructions found in 1 Corinthians 7:12–16 and 1 Peter 3:1–7.

Unmarried Christian adults should live faithfully to Jesus Christ in all of their relationships and use the opportunities their singleness affords them for the advancement of the gospel and the prosperity of the church according to the apostolic instructions found in 1 Corinthians 7.

The church expects its members to follow the Scriptures in home government. God has required that godliness in the home have a high priority in every life. The home holds a central attention in God’s Law and is the object of frequent exhortation in the New Testament. Husbands are expected to rule their homes with gentleness but firmness. They are to love their wives sacrificially with a Christ-like love and are to give leadership to the spiritual vitality of the home. Wives must be subject to and respectful of their husbands as to the Lord. Parents should train up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4) by holy example, catechizing, consistent education, and firm, loving discipline (including the careful, measured, biblical use of the rod of correction—Proverbs 13:24; 22:15; 23:13–14; 29:15). Children must reverently honor and obey their parents (Ephesians 6:1–3). These primary responsibilities, prayerfully executed, will honor the name of Christ in the community and strengthen the cause of Christ in generations to come.
